The problem with all non-animal sources of protein is their ratio of protein to carb+fat. I eat ~.8gr of protein per lb of body weight per day to maintain my muscle mass. If I had to get that protein from non-animal sources, I'd be way over my total daily calorie intake.

There are plenty of vegan athletes, and even vegan power lifters [0]. It’s totally possible to eat a plant based diet and have a lot of muscle mass.

Possible? Yes. More work? Also yes.

You have to eat way more tofu, beans, eggs, etc. to get the equivalent amount of protein in chicken, steak, pork, etc.

Most people I know that eat 0.8g protein per lb of body mass use protein supplements to achieve such a high protein intake.
Tablespoon of peanut butter really isn't any more work. It's probably less.

> How many beans equal a serving of meat?

> In general, 1 ounce of meat, poultry or fish, ¼ cup cooked beans, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter, or ½ ounce of nuts or seeds can be considered as 1 ounce-equivalent from the Protein Foods Group.[1]

That amount of protein is entirely, totally unnecessary.
What are your qualifications for making such a statement? Do you have any sources to back that up?
