I would turn your comment around and argue that 10 million years of evolution weren't focused on producing a homo sapiens sapiens example that could best drive a mouse and keyboard across a 2D interface. The fact that we've acquired some facility with doing so is a testament to our generality rather than the suitableness of the interface. Why is VR important? Because it's a gateway to immersive interface patterns than allows our brains to more fully flex their innate resources.
