If I'm squeezing enough margin out of my customers that I can afford to sponsor a football team with some of the leftover cash then you probably don't want to deal with me.

I think about that every time I walk into a bank with an elaborate building or a ton of staff hanging around.
True enough, but they become Patrons of the Arts in a sense.
Football was doing fine before this all started. It just multiplied the wages of some people who already earn more per year than I will ever own in a lifetime.
on the other hand, do you know how much it costs to sponsor?

maybe it's relatively cheap, but nobody does it because football fans isn't that of a target

I don't know about this sport, but in other large sports it can costs millions per year to be a sponsor.
It varies, but in any case, I doubt it's cheap relative to much: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_football_sponsorship
About half of those kit numbers are less per year than a single 30 second ad during the superbowl.
That's a little dishonest. The prices are in Pounds, and there a significant high outliers.

Superbowl ads currently average around $8m USD (£5.93m).

You're right, only about half of them are less than £5.93m with one of them being almost the same.
