EV sales and resale values cratered in 2024. Instead of forcing EVs on consumers, why not allow the market and consumers choose?

There is the famous Henry Ford quote, something about how id he'd listened to his customers, he'd have built a faster horse.
That's not really the same thing. That's about product development. Letting the market decide means to bring your product to the market and let it decide. I agree that focus groups and surveys are not the best way to build an innovative product but California was preventing consumers from having a choice, completely different situation.
California was forcing people to abandon their horses and buggies a little faster to get rid of all the manure.

Californias moves are smart and correct if a bit too overly autious (setting it at 2035).

Ice cars are soon going the way of horse and buggies. The EU is banning them soon, EVs are taking over. The smart thing is to tell the older carmakers to not stick to what they know because that will be gone soon. And because speeding up the transition to EVs will have a modest but significant effect on preventing the worst of climate change. Remember the disasters associated with climate change are already here the longer we wait to take action the worse it will get

Apple's first iPhone with a large touchscreen has a similar backstory
China is going to dominate the car market and shutter US factories if the US stops trying to be a leader in EVs

If America is going to be great again, wouldn't leading in emerging tech be one of those things it strives for?

Because we only have the one planet to live on, and we all have to share it.
