Ask HN: Is Getting Product Featured on Techcrunch an Unfair Advantage?
1 points by dpacman 1209 days ago
In the tech world, getting featured on a major tech publication like Techcrunch can be a great boost for a product or company. But is it an unfair advantage for those few lucky enough to get featured? I'm interested to hear what others have to say - share your thoughts!

It's certainly an advantage, but why unfair?

To be sure, there may be an unearned privilege that underlies getting coverage (reporters and news orgs aren't free from bias, after all), but you can't just assume that, and declare all such coverage unfair.

It is a lottery ticket, and winning tickets aren't evenly distributed, but neither do they go only to preordained winners, nor is getting coverage a guarantee of success (though it certainly helps).

Thank you for your insightful response. You make a good point that it's not necessarily unfair for companies to receive coverage on major tech publications like Techcrunch, as the process is not predetermined and success is not guaranteed.

However, it's worth noting that some companies may have more resources or connections to facilitate this kind of coverage, which can give them an advantage over others who may not have those same resources.

Again, it is an advantage, but not necessarily an unfair one.

You can construct an explicitly unfair scenario if you wish (say, a familial relationship with an editor), but absent something like that, I'm not sure there is anything to complain about, even in principle.

I'm failing to see the issue.
