Ask HN: Any IT professionals living in a homestead?

I work remotely and me and my wife are thinking about buying some land and forming a homestead. We both had the experience of living in a somewhat rural community as kids and do know how much work such a thing asks for, and because of that we want to start small and grow our self sufficiency over time.

As I can work remotely the plan would be to continue working to have a steady cash income while my wife would be more concentrated on the homestead. We live in the sub-mediterranean region and and would there for some land.

Any other IT professionals combining homesteading and remote work?

I'm no longer doing IT professionally. Bootstrapping my own homestead on a <40 acre parcel.

If you already know how much work it is and you want to do it then do it. But understand there is a bit of a culture shock. I had to adapt a lot. And a lot of harsh lessons on reality came down the pike. It's not for the faint of heart. It's dirty and bloody and uncomfortable at times. But for me i wouldn't go back to the city. The city is full of dysfunction, and dysfunctional people. And you don't notice it until you leave. Harsh reality awaits those who go down this path.

We bought a small farm this summer. We're not planning to go full homestead but will try to grow some of our food, starting from the chickens. And more than homesteading we are interested on running our own regenerative ag farm in future. I'm working as a freelance programmer and as another commenter mentioned it's hard to find enough time to do the chores of the farm. But overall we have enjoyed here. There's no really time to sit on the sofa and watch Netflix but that didn't make us happy in the city either :)

Homesteading is a full time job in and of itself. Doing that and trying to hold down a full-time remote gig might be more challenging than you think.

Just want to comment that remote working in general is going to increase these types of conversations, which I believe is a positive.

Not on topic ... but as a life change I will only consider full remote work. I believe there will be many many more like myself and yourself. I believe this is going to alter how we as a society in general think about our primary residents. In your example you are considering a homestead. For me, I am considering moving between residences.

Network connections. If you don't have network, then you don't work remotely or very poorly. Availability, quality and price depends highly on the region and place.
