From my perspective there is nothing 'un-american' about wechat. It's literally facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp etc. but for china. He just didn't want to say he is going to turn it Facebook.

How i read this is twitter will offer more features like voice and video calling, groups, etc.

Each of these platforms differentiate eachother in very key ways but elon has shown what he wants twitters to be. A 'Town-Hall'. Voting, 'Paid contributors' and you can bet your ass there will be alot of crypto involved.

Again - Not saying whether this is going to be a dumpster fire of shitshow, oh wait, yes i did.... but just my thoughts on some things.

If anything about capitalism has shown us in the last 20 years, Dumpster fires of a shitshow is a great market to be in.

To be fair wechat does a bit more than Facebook, like storing transportation cards, credit cards, as well as making payments and ordering food. Not saying that wechat is unamerican, nor do i think the parent comment is saying that. I will say though, the consumer markets are really really different. A lot more Chinese people use cells phones for more things (especially in the cities), in fact i'm pretty sure laptop ownership rates are pretty low compared to smartphones.

But yeah I think he'll probably just turn it into another facebook, or at least it'll start there. Not really groundbreaking, if anything, facebook has become so bloated that the new features might even harming it. Just the other day I had to help my mom find the groups feature hidden in some menu or another on the app.
