As a US citizen, I often wonder how much value we are getting back from our military spending and what amount are we being bilked by the defense industry.

I've heard all kinds of stories about the vast amounts of wasteful spending the contractors get away with in order to make their company a buck.

I don't know if things changed now but I was reading an article about when the the military funded the development of GPS and it was run on quite a tight budget with fierce competitions among competing groups. And it still funded some of the most brilliant engineers and scientists to work critical problems like how make a tiny atomic clock with low power to win in a satellite.
