I was wondering if this was about Petrolia based on the title! Anyone into camping should check out the Mattole Campground around that area. It's at the head of the lost coast trail, but there's no permit requirement and it's only a few dollars a night. There's a nice hike down to an abandoned lighthouse with some elephant seals nearby.

Slightly off topic, but any idea where I might find any of the Union Mattole Oil Company well-heads that were apparently abandoned in place? https://ohp.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21420 (No. 543)

From the very limited information I've found they were somewhere along/above the North Fork, maybe somewhere near the underground Scientology base? The name of "Oil Ridge" seems like it might be related. There are a lot of private parcels up there though and I don't want to trespass :)

I haven't heard of those! Sounds like an adventure for next time I'm up there. It says that the marker is on Mattole Rd in Petrolia, so there's a good chance the well-heads are on private land.

Definitely worth being wary of private land out there, I'm sure a lot of people in that area don't take too kindly to visitors. Somebody flew a drone over the compound you're talking about, it was up on YouTube for a while. Can't seem to find it now.

Is it safe?
I'll echo Lammy here - as long as you know the tides and don't get too close to any wildlife, it's a fairly easy hike. Budget more time than you think you'll need, I was surprised by how slow it was walking down the sand. Windy point is aptly named, so be careful of things flying away.

It's a multi-day backpacking trip, but you can hike further past the lighthouse and down the Lost Coast if you get a permit. They're sold out months in advance, though.

Make the walk to the lighthouse at low tide due to a creek crossing, but otherwise yes. It's here, and you can see the trailhead a little to the north: https://goo.gl/maps/RU3KTJvrgAsg5QHm7
