Microsoft forced me to add a phone nunber for "security reasons" because of "supspicious login activity". It was the first time I logged into the Microsoft account after I created it one day ago. There was nothing listed in the login activity section.

That was exactly my experience after posting an unrelated technical question on some MS forum. Wanted to delete my account immediately because I didn't want to deal with their botnet flagging accounts. Could not delete my account anymore without providing a telephone number. Their dead database entry then...

I guess they flagged it because I didn't provide contact information in the first place.
