Ask HN: Any Czech programmers out there?

Specifically around Prague... Just wondering what the tech landscape is like there and what opportunities exist. What have your experiences been like seeking work and have you been able to do anything really interesting or cool? Is Prague (and the rest of CR) a good place to work in tech? I'd love to hear your stories.

I'm in Prague but not Czech. Tech scene here is strong. Good technical schools and almost all of the major players have offices here - Microsoft (Skype team), SAP, AWS, Google. A lot of startups too and a few game studios. If you're a Senior dev you can expect to make at most about 60-80k USD / year, more typically 50-60k. Managers can make more but no one makes Amazon USA type salaries here.

I work remote freelance for US companies and charge USD, so that could be an option too if you are coming from there. Not sure what you define as "interesting or cool" for work but I would imagine you can find it.

I should have added this in the question. If you don't mind my asking how long have you lived in Prague and where did you emigrate from? Thanks for the links... I'd love to find a job in Prague.

I'm from the good 'ol USA - been here for 6 years. My partner is Czech so it was easy for me to get a visa and then permanent residence. If you are coming here without a Czech partner and no job you need to consider how you'll get a Visa to stay - if you are Schengen then it's not an issue.
Not Czech, but Prague based. Yes, there is a lively tech community, somewhat harder to enjoy if you don't speak Czech or are an extreme introvert. Still lots of oursourcing companies but also many startups/international companies. At the workplace it is common to speak English, not hard at all to get a job.

Ah yes a distinction I should have made in my original question. Definitely interested in Czech/Prague based experiences regardless of lineage.

Hi i am in Slovakia/Bratislava. Why dont you find a remote job ? You do need some form of a company but otherwise its way better.

Anyway Slovakia but also Czech is a good place to be, its a proper western society, safe and cheap.

Bratislava looks incredible! I've never been there but will absolutely have to remedy that. I just watched a walking video through Bratislava and fell in love a little bit.
