Leave Old Job Off Resume?
1 points by software_guy_10 1719 days ago
I had a blue-collar job about 10 years ago before getting into software. There was some physical pain I dealt with there doing the job, as well as a toxic work environment. After about half a year, I quit. I just didn't show up and did not tell anybody. I regret ghosting them in this way, but there is nothing I can do about it now. After that, I had about a 6-month gap before I found employment in software. So should I put this job on my resume? If so, I'll have only the 6 month gap on my resume, but risk companies calling them to verify employment, and finding out about me ghosting them. If I leave the job off my resume, I have a one year gap on my resume, and risk companies finding about the job anyway through comprehensive background checks. What should I do?

At some point it's time to start trimming your resume. I mean, unless you're applying for your first real job or something, no one cares about how you worked at McDonalds when you were in high school (I sure didn't, when I was reading resumes... if they're that anal, you probably don't want to work there anyway).

10 years is Long Enough, especially in this field.

I'd recommend labeling the section "Recent work history" or maybe "Relevant work history" and then ending it with "Further work history furnished upon request".

The odds of them asking for "further work history" are very small (unless the company is completely dominated by HR... which, of course, some are).

If none of your jobs before this one were in software, none of them are really relevant, or so I see it.
