Assume that the superstar=100*average_programmer is true, then tell me: How many of these superstars are there in the world and how likely is it that they want to work at your startup? It seems that many people here have experience with these superstars? Maybe they are not so rare after all? |

The fact of the matter is not everyone can hire amazing programmers. Average is average; this isn't Lake Wobegon.
Most startups would be better off figuring out how to get the best out of the average programmer, than investing in the search costs of that diamond in the rough. If you find one, awesome, but the plan shouldn't revolve around it.
