Also, there's another app being worked on called Stamp is a similar messaging system as well, but uses an HTTP based transport instead of SMTP.

The things that set Stamp apart is that is has:

* Spam mitigation in the base layer so relay operators don't need to deal with it * An indirect address lookup system so you don't get tied to one Stamp provider. * No attachment to PII to start accounts. (No phone number or email required)

Considering the way delta chat chat works; that doesn’t matter much. Approximately nobody has that client installed. And SMTP is not ideal for these things.

Doesn't matter. The whole point of Delta Chat is that the other parties in the chat don't have to use it or even know about its existence. You lose encryption, but at least you can message those people. It looks just like any other email message.

That's not much of a point. I can already talk to those people. Why do I need a bad solution to a problem I don't have?

And it would be good to include such information in the site, because crypto has already got a scammy smell, in general.

It depends on the host you use. Right now it's basically free. Anyone can run a relay server and set their prices.

And if I'm only talking to my friends via IM, why would I need spam protection? Or in other words , could I just use a free server?

Because there's a huge difference between free and paid.

Why would your friends require you to pay them? You set your own fees. What’s your attention worth?
