While not directly about data storage, I loved this tweet [1] from Edward Snowdon this week:

> do we really trust signal? cause i see zero reason to.

Here's a reason: I use it every day and I'm not dead yet.

I like this reason because you don't need to know anything about tech at all to be able to understand this. You also don't need to trust or like Snowden. If you view Snowden as a hero or a traitor, it changes nothing. All you need to trust is that he's got no reason to lie about using Signal, and neither does Elon Musk.
Unless he's an NSA operative who's promoting a honeypot.
That's a stupid reason. He's not dead (or at least imprisoned) yet because USA doesn't have an extradition treaty with Russia. What does a chat app have to do with it?
Why would he need to be extradited to the USA in order to be killed?
If the US government wanted to send a hit squad to Russia to take him out, the fact that he uses Signal instead of WhatsApp isn't what would be holding them back.
One could read into Snowden's tweet that he has sent/received messages using Signal that would with certainly have pushed the US government into wanting to send that hit squad.
You can read into it however you want, but the fact is that USA isn't going to essentially invade Russia over him.
