Ask HN: When is it time to switch from Shopify to a proprietary solution?
7 points by bbrb 2496 days ago
The site in question grew to ~ 5 million in annual revenue within a few years. The founder now has the feeling, it might be time to migrate from Shopify to something proprietary, to build something own.

What can be gained doing this switch? What are the advantages of a self made site?

Many thanks for your inputs.

It seems you picked a solution and are now looking for a problem. If you have to ask these questions, don't have problems with your current setup and perhaps switching is not really necessary. The better questions to ask are:

- What are the shortcoming of your current site that would require you to have your own proprietary solution?

- Would the cost of implementing the solution be less than the benefit of the move?

Thanks. It makes sense.

I'll suggest these questions to be asked.

I think the question has to be the reverse. You found major problems with Shopify and should be asking if self-made site will solve those problems. If you don't have problems, you shouldn't be moving.
Thanks for your reply.

I could have added to the description, that an own site might suit the values of the brand better, which are: self-made, attention to detail, sustainable etc.

But your point still stands.

I think maybe you're trading Shopify fees you don't like today for Stripe fees you won't like tomorrow, I'd just leave the site making $5m/yr alone and build however many other websites you want.
Interesting point, that you cannot really escape the fees. Thanks for your input.
Switching to different provider in the middle of $5M annual revenue from all-in-one web services provider to someone else will guarantee to cost fortune and does not guiarantee the benefits. IMHO.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. It sounds plausible.
