Also currently defeating my ad blocker. Soon youtube... I will be blocking your ads again soon...

After not seeing ads for so long, actually getting an ad is insufferable - I closed the window and just didn't watch the video and set a mental note that I might go back and watch it once my ad blocker is updated. Immediately after the ad started playing was a pop-under that asked if i wanted to upgrade to youtube red. If they actually defeat ad blockers, I actually would subscribe if it meant no more ads again.

Do people on the internet actually watch these ads? I thought to myself why in the world would anyone want to go on the internet if it meant having to view this garbage. I'm really getting spoiled and conditioned with my mostly ad free existence.

For those who use YouTube a lot I HIGHLY recommend playing for YouTube Red. A much easier way of getting rid of the ads if you can afford $10/mth.
Unless you don't live in United States, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea.
A few years ago they forbid apps on the Play Store from having background playback for YouTube, in anticipation of the release of YouTube Red, which would offer it as a paid feature.

Still waiting.

Wait no more, just install F-Droid and NewPipe ( https://f-droid.org/packages/org.schabi.newpipe/ ).

Bonus feature: it does not use the API so Youtube can not track what do you watch.

Oh neat, thank you!
I would like to so much. Not for the comfort features (I got all of these already with mpv and youtube-dl), but for the feeling of not ripping them off when blocking ads, and in part also for the original programming (esp. Mind Field).

But, as the sibling says, Youtube Red is limited to a few countries. From what I've heard, it's not in Germany because they cannot figure out licensing with the music industry. I find this utterly stupid, because music videos is precisely the part that does not interest me at all about Red.

I wish I could.
I'm using uBlock with quite a few extra lists and it's still working for me (Firefox).
Google has a whitelisting agreement with Adblock Plus now.
It seems to me like Youtube's video ads fall squarely within Adblock Plus's own list of unacceptable ads, under "Pre-roll video ads": https://adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads#not-acceptable-ad

Have they given up on the guise that this is anything other than a money-grabbing extortion scheme?

>>> that asked if i wanted to upgrade to youtube red

I really wish I even get that option...
