A few years ago they forbid apps on the Play Store from having background playback for YouTube, in anticipation of the release of YouTube Red, which would offer it as a paid feature.

Wait no more, just install F-Droid and NewPipe ( https://f-droid.org/packages/org.schabi.newpipe/ ).

Bonus feature: it does not use the API so Youtube can not track what do you watch.
