Ask HN: What are the indicators you need to find another job?
7 points by throwy666 3636 days ago
Talking with my peers we noticed that we have different indicators that trigger a "nope! I need to clean up my resume and find another job asap!"

For example: * People around you quitting * Bad Manager, micromanaging * High pressure * No overpaid time, no rewards

What are yours?

The last company I worked for was a horror story from hell.

On my interview day, the manager of said company passed me in the hallway without stopping to acknowledge me, because he had to go out on a personal errand; this despite the fact that I had an appointment and was expected. When he returned and after my interview with him, he took me over to the owner who hired me immediately without reading my three page resume( "too long") at a less than competitive wage ("because the other guy ho you'll be working with is earning that amount.")

The work environment was filthy, the staff were insubordinate and the manger had a system wherein his favorites ratted on other workers. At the onset, I was cheated of one weeks wages due to an accounting quirk peculiar to the company. Everyone there was actively looking for other jobs. Pay was often late.... I could go on.

I stayed on for far too long because I needed the money. When do you think I should have quit?

The signs are always there.

you find yourself talking / thinking about it ;)

On more serious note, your linked-in stream is most probably filled with posts about signs you have to quit. Mine is.

What I never saw is articles about when not to quit. What are the signs the job is worth sticking around.

This is a bit quip-ish, but:

Your gut. Your gut. YOUR GUT.

The third time your gut tells you it's time to go, get the wheels turning (if you haven't already.)

Also, if you think people are starting to treat you differently, they probably are. Leave, before you're asked to.
