I agree with you, however I did enjoy opening up the developer console in Firefox and deleting all of the obnoxious background.

Thank you! That works for chrome too. Right-click => inspect, then on the highlighted line the inspection window right-click => delete element.

This works on Pinterest, too, for their obnoxious sign up black screen.

Even quicker - right click->block element in Ad block Plus. Done. I too found them extremely distracting to a point where I couldn't read the text.
