Internet of Things – the essential papers?

I am working on a research project on the Internet of Things and wondering if anybody can point out some essential papers beyond the barrage of white papers.

Got the origins with Xerox-Park later Auto-ID-Center etc covered but am wondering if there is any good academic work from the past decade?
