It doesn't seem a big leap to have a small UPS at home ($42 gets you 37mins@20W) or even a rechargable battery in the router and mail server.

Further resilence could be handled by partering with another device at a trusted person's house, to act as a backup MX server.

Neither does, making Dropbox itself, "trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem. From Windows or Mac, this FTP account could be accessed through built-in software." [1] :)

Obviously it needs to be a lot easier than that - the fact that it's difficult right now is the problem. It needs to easy to manage like a smart phone or tablet is.
