All that stuff you said is just all stereotypes. Outside of young, hip SV you'll see young programmers and very seasoned ones working side by side on a large variety of projects. My office has the age makeup of most any office you'll see anywhere - in fact, we might skew a bit older, I believe there is only 1-2 people here still in their 20s. I also work with many people who "aged in" - Its their second career. Second careerers seem to be the best at their job from what I've seen. At least the ones I've personally worked with. I have a great respect for the older people I work with - they are all just so smart, their experience really shows and is very valuable. I've seen those stereotypes absolutely nowhere on the East Coast and I've lived in several cities in several different East Coast states. There is some people on HN that seem to not realize that their experience being 24 working at a SV startup can be different from someone else's experiences. Especially the ones who talk about how many jobs there are in the industry. Because somehow if there are jobs in my town there must be jobs everywhere else too? |
