Things to consider for equity position in exchange of salary

Hi All, I am a developer and recently I am being offered for the equity position in exchange of salary for flexible(fulltime, parttime or little) work. The clients of the project are actively seeking for the investors. They know that I am the key person who can take the project( in terms of development) in the most successful path as I have worked on it from scratch to the current state.

They however cannot provide me the salary at this point. But they want to provide me equity in exchange. Since this thing is completely new to me and I am not aware of that are the factors or things that I should take care of before making the decision or accepting/declining the offer. Any help will be highly appreciated.
