I was once told that the name was chosen to make it easier to cold call potential customers. Saying "Hi, this is Dave from the Santa Cruz Operation" was designed to fool people in to thinking that it was an internal call from another branch of the same organisation. I have no idea if this is true, it's probably completely apocryphal, but it's a nice hack if it's true. |
