I charged hourly for the first 10 years or so. Eventually I reached the point where quoting hourly made me sound like a crazy person and derailed most negotiations (because my number was so high), so I started quoting by project. Never looked back. Got most of my tips from Brennan Dunn's podcast. Worth checking out.
