I had almost the exact opposite experience. I was in a typing class, but I'd been typing for several years (programming c/c++ on an old 286). I breezed through the typing portion, then started messing around with the computer itself. The teacher caught me, and said "You know what? I know how to handle this.". He handed me a copy of something called "Visual Basic version 4". The rest is history.
