Freud had it that sublimated aggression provides energy. Like all things w/ an indisputable theorist, I'm not sure if he's on the right page. However if it was true, it would explain the value in developer holy wars.

The sublimated libido, according to Freud, contributes to the formation and maintenance of permanent object relations and to the 'molding of psychic structures'; once the psychic structures are formed, the energy is at the disposal of the ego and the superego. Similarly, aggressive energy is 'neutralized' (Hartmann, 1952) and thus can be transferred from the id to the ego.
