Can anyone find benchmarks? I can't spend much time looking at it unless they back up their claims.

Benchmarks are under development: you can see the code in https://github.com/grpc/grpc/tree/master/test/core/fling and https://github.com/grpc/grpc/tree/master/test/cpp/qps .
