Wow, that takes me back. I wrote a game very similar to that (but with randomly generated symmetric boards) a while ago called Cesare. And by "while ago" I mean around 1998 or so.

Same, I wrote the exact same game - with the exception that the board was constant, 6x6 maybe - when I was in highschool - 1998-99.
