I think that it's supposed to demonstrate how inaccurate the Mercator projection (the one that's used on Google Maps) is at conveying relative size of continents. For example, Greenland looks enormous whereas it's actually quite small, while Africa looks much smaller than it is in reality. Google uses this projection because it's best at preserving angles and shapes. |
