For a throwaway account recently it took me >20 tries to register an HN account.

Did it on my second try -- I, personally, don't think it's so bad. I thought it was a bit crazy when I first looked at it but if you look hard enough, you can make the letters out. I am not sure what the idea is behind the "challenge text" though.
