I'd use different terminology. Arithmetic, two column geometry proofs, and even transposing a sheet of music to another key, are all math. I think the author is talking about education, not really math. Jeremy wants kids learning math to think about, be interested in, and search for meaning in math. He's right that teaching rote mechanics doesn't lead to curiosity for most people. But there are no high school classes that reliably lead to curiosity. |
