In general, we feel like our body (brain included) and mind are the same thing. We want to go sleep but we keep worrying about work. We are trying to get focused on something but noises outside break our concentration. We need do to something but the fear paralyzes us. We feel an itch and we have to scratch it. I think the best way to describe what these practices teach is a way to realize your mind is something else, and you can choose what to do with stimuli (external and internal) instead of just responding mechanically to it, or being dragged away by it. This is what I've been taught about meditation anyway. |
