Some Lexus vehicles I've been in featured a center console joystick that vibrated when the cursor moved over an element on the screen. I found it to be the most intuitive and the best at keeping my eyes on the road while still being able to navigate the various menus. Not perfect, but certainly better than a touch screen with no feedback requiring you to take your vision off the road.
