Neat, but I'd imagine that this represents a steep learning curve for many. Say that I borrow a friend's car that has this. How do I figure out how to change the temperature? Touching five fingers close together is easy but not intuitive.

I agree. There are many good interface ideas here, but cars interfaces need to reach people of all sorts. ie. people with handicaps, disabilities, etc.

Great ideas though. It's great to see someone working on this! Nice job.

It could probably be clearer/more detailed (e.g. have actual instructions), but this: http://matthaeuskrenn.com/new-car-ui/images/07.jpg is basically a howto + configuration pane

I don't know how to invoke it on the demo/prototype though.

Try tapping in the very bottom right corner with one finger. There's an invisible button that shows the fake Driving Directions UI. Then tap on that with 5 fingers at once to make the hints appear. They are just static graphics too though.
