I came here to say basically the same thing. If the author uses your gem, the timezone/active timeperiod identification route is greatly lessened. I actually think the combination of a custom domain and Github makes it much more likely he'll be discovered. Buying a domain means transacting bitcoin, which as others have pointed out, is not foolproof.
