Errors are countable. Should be:

There is an alarming number of typos and grammatical errors ...

Countable elements should use are instead of is

There are many cars. There is much pain.

The number is singular.

There are many errors. There is an alarming number of them. There is too much debate. But not enough tipos.

I would call that borderline, the original phrase was still clear and wasn't hard to read. Also, as verbal empire English, it's fine.
