There are countless historical examples of the burning of books and cultural artifacts to suppress ideology and culture. The Catholic Church was a constant destroyer and perverter of opposition cultures for political power. A few examples are: Savonarola's Bonfire of the Vanities, the Spanish Inquisition, the conquest of the new world... The total destruction of information is an act of political conquest. It eliminates the ability to use that information to form an opposition in the future and it delegitimizes any current opposition. I'm seeing at least two other mentions in Canadian press: http://o.canada.com/technology/environment/harper-government... http://thetyee.ca/News/2013/12/09/Dismantling-Fishery-Librar... |
