Indeed. There are two forces pushing against each other in this discussion of the arts. On the one hand, tech money does find it's way into the hands of artists. (In NY there's a saying that "Every financial services job pays for an artist" and employment in the latter follows the former) But artists need a place to live. When artists leave, they can't afford to move in because of anti-development policies that discourage investment in the housing stock. The rent control policies protect existing inhabitants of existing buildings, but wind up crushing everyone else. Good intentions, but terrible unintended consequences. |
