Isn't using "them/they" in the singular to avoid gendered pronouns still considered grammatically incorrect? If gendered pronouns are such a big issue why is there no effort to make a lasting official solution by updating the standards of English? I know most of my school teachers would not have let me written "they/them" in this situation. Have things changed and "they" is now acceptable? I think the only correct solution available today which sounds decent at all is to say "the user". |

No. Singular they has never been grammatically incorrect. The frequency of its use has simply varied throughout the years. For what it's worth, singular they seems to predate gender-neutral 'he' in written English.
