I don't think even normal contractors are that expensive.

$60 an hour is not particularly expensive for a good contract programmer. Salaried, that would equate to a very good rate, but nothing extraordinary.
You're from the Bay Area and you think $60/hr is expensive? I charge the least out of contracting friends, and I charge a non-trivial amount more than that. I also don't live in or around San Francisco.
