How can you tell? I click upvote, the buttons disappear, and I have to move on with my life.

I go to https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6547669, vote to e.g. 0, button disappears, reload page, I get the same points (and buttons) back.

Oh, on posts/polls I can see scores. I cannot see any scores on comments.

Try to upvote then refresh the page. You will see (or not) that the upvote icon re-appears and the vote count decrements by one.
