The first point, getting to know people online before meeting them, is super helpful. It's nice to be able to instantly know a few people right when an event starts off.

Right! The problem is sometimes to find out who is coming. That is why FB groups like Y Combinator's Startup School 2013 ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/705664592796188/ ) can be so useful.
