I'd say NVidia use closed source mostly to push Cuda instead of people trying to use openCL. E.g. their OpenCL driver imposes 3GB memory limits (or at least used to in the past) for kernels but with Cuda they will enable 64bit if necessary (on the same gpu hardware). |
