No, he is right. They don't believe in nations, they believe strongly in their own country as a "nation", but not in the common meaning of a nation which is ethinically based. If they believed in nations (in the way other countries believe), irish-americans would identify more with being irish than with being americans for example (and the same for other ethnicities). |
