OK, fixed.

I use an Optimus laptop (yeah, bad decision) which Chromium doesn't support. The solution is to tell it to support it anyway:

$ optirun chromium-browser --ignore-gpu-blacklist

Now it works fine.

Edit: fixing the problem on firefox:

$ optirun firefox
