Marissa Mayer is notorious for depending on data to make decisions- this sounds like they're trying to see what clicks with users.

Not sure if I'm a fan of making decisions like this via a/b testing, but we'll see how it turn out.

Sounds really smart to me: get tons of feedback on a critical branding decision, while having a fun, unique, and potentially buzz-building little experiment that could drive users to your home page daily. Perhaps most importantly, it requires no commitment on Yahoo's part, considering the bad PR Microsoft and eBay both recently experienced when announcing their new logos.
She is crazy smart, likely a genius in her field. I just think this move to Yahoo is a long shot, motivated by Hubris more than anything and I still don't think it will bode well for her. I hope I'm wrong, but there are some things all the brains in the world can't fix.
Smart way to perform a branding experiment without commitment.
Well, I hope they nuke this one off their potential future logo replacements, because it's honestly terrible. It barely has any personality.
Of course they'll start weak to avoid raising expectations and make the ultimate reveal look better.

I think I've found a leak of the final winner:

Damn, I fell for that :) Thanks for the laugh, I guess I should've paid more attention to the hostname.
me too! :P
It doesn't say a new one, it says "a variation of the new logo" for every of the next 30 days.
They obviously did not test this page on an iPad with pinchzoom. It looks like utter crop when zoomed
