There is so very correlation between grades and creativity[1], which I consider to be far more important than raw intelligence (as measured by an IQ test). The problem with the OP is not that he got so worried about grades, it's that he/she let is obsession with grades impact his relationships with others. He saw them as a zero-sum game, and that's not the way life is (generally) played. Even within university, where grades may be distributed in a zero-sum fashion, the entire experience is most assuredly not zero-sum. More importantly than all of that, though, is the OP gained a large level of self-awareness.
