Zoning only exists because of racism and classism, remember this. After Buchanan v. Warley in 1917, municipalities turned to race-neutral tools like single-family zoning, minimum lot sizes, and setback requirements to indirectly enforce economic and racial segregation. These land-use controls acted as proxies, allowing communities to maintain exclusionary barriers under the guise of local police powers and neighborhood character.
